Day 48

After morning coffee, Heather went to check on Bromley and the poults and they were out of the nest and walking around the yard.  The clover and grass is very high and in trying to follow their mother around the yard, the little guys would get lost in the clover.  You could see the clover moving but not the little turkeys as they moved through it.  Finally, Bromley no longer covers them up when we approach, so I was able to get this picture.

Mike wanted to check out the hot water system which is heated by the log burner as well as the solar set up, so he set a fire in the log burner.

This evening the temperature in the water tank was 74 C or 165 F.  This is a 300 litre tank or 79.6 gallons.  So I guess there is going to be plenty of hot water!  While Mike was running the hot water in the shower, we found that water was leaking into the bedroom closet and out into the hallway.  When he checked a little closer he realized that the base of the shower had not been sealed with silicone.  Just another one of those little things that was overlooked when the shower was installed.  Mike will fix it tomorrow.

The plants that we had purchased a couple of weeks ago were still sitting in pots in the yard so I dug up a holding area for them and got them all planted in the ground.  We can't really do much landscaping right now since there is still lots of construction planned for the exterior of the house.  So these plants will have to wait for a while before being planted in their permanent places.

One of the landscaping decisions that has been made is to line the driveway leading up to the house with sugar maples.  Heather has purchased the first tree and tomorrow we will plant it at the beginning of the driveway.

Heather has also purchased some native grasses and we will plant those around the mail box out on Isaac Road.

The lil turkeys are so cute... 4total?? What do you do with the eggs that don't hatch?? Do they cannibalize them? Just curious.

And what do the turkeys who were raised by chickens, think of the other turkeys??

  3. Tim - Four turkeys total from this clutch. We have Bexley at 28 days with her clutch on Sunday. Eggs that do not hatch are abandoned in the nest and just thrown away. Not much interaction between the two sets of female turkeys yet. They and Romeo were kept separate when they first arrived so they could get used to the pen. By the time they came out into the yard, the other turkeys were in their nests sitting on eggs. Now all the turkeys are sitting on eggs, except Bromley and she has her chicks. So there has not been much interaction among the female turkeys, and Romeo is so full of himself that he doesn't even notice the others!!
