Day 46 - Baby Turkeys

First thing this morning we checked on Bromley and sure enough she had one little turkey next to her in the nest.  Later in the day Heather spotted another one and by the end of the day there were four.  We know she was sitting on seven fertilized eggs so I think there will be more little ones in the morning.  Unfortunately, every time I got close enough to take pictures, she gathered up the babies under her wings and I couldn't get a picture.  Maybe tomorrow.

Mike provided us with four inch nails to finish the raised garden box, reinforced it with screws (why didn't we think of that?) and then helped us move it out to the garden.  And here it is!

Heather and I filled it about half full with dirt from the giant dirt pile and then Mike built a screening table so we could put the dirt through the screen and get rid of all the rocks.

After screening more soil and filling the box full of beautiful black soil, we planted green beans, broccoli, spring onions and yellow onions.

Mike took a turn screening the dirt so Heather could plant a herb garden with dill, oregano, cilantro, mint, and parsley in one of the half barrels.

We took a break for lunch and Mike made a sandwich I have never seen before - bread, butter, marmite, and potato chips.  Words cannot describe it, so here is a picture!

We put up the fencing to enclose the entire garden area, Mike did most of the work, and then he mounted the two gates.

After Heather planted marigolds in two of the garden boxes and I planted two hills of cucumbers, we called it a day.

We have had four of the five female turkeys sitting on eggs for the last couple of weeks.  One of the turkeys, Cracker, has just been hanging out with the chickens.  But each day she seems to disappear for an hour or so and then she's back with the chickens.  So Mike went looking for her today when we noticed that she was gone and found her in the woods out by the front part of the driveway sitting in a nest under a brush pile.  When she came back into the yard, Heather went out to see how many eggs she has laid.  She now has seven eggs in the next and will probably lay a few more before she starts to sit on them.

At the end of the day Mike decided he was going to fire up the bath tub.

And enjoy a long hot soak with a glass of wine!

Good night!!

  1. Hmmmmmm Butter, fermented yeast, and potato chips on white bread... YUMMMM (Not) Only Down Under... LOL Hope you enjoyed Dinner Later, even if the KB was not there to cook it.

Very curious how you control a boiling bathtub....although it looks like a good time....Now if they can convert it to a 6 person jacuzzi when they finish the bathrooms, you'll be all set.

Curious, what are you doing for pest control for all the planting? I know Mary used to garden at the Arleta House.. she grew lots of garlic and other specific plants that were natural pest repellents. I THINK Marigolds are actually one that repels them too...

  2. Marigolds do repel the bugs, but the chickens actually eat them. They are the best pest control!
